Juteopolis - Education and Outreach

SSA2010

Juteopolis at Verdant Works, Dundee Heritage and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.

Last year the SSA was proud to exhibit our collaborative floor piece entitled Juteopolis. This installation was created to mark our Annual Exhibition being held in Dundee and contributed to our highly successful SSA at Vision 2009. The Vision collaboration with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art went on to win Best Educational Event of The Year at the Events Awards Scotland. The concept of Juteopolis was to acknowledge the context of Dundee creatively and be a focal point for our exhibition. Our artists were asked to explore the subject of jute and were given a small wooden cube on which to express this. The cubes were then assembled into a large scale floor sculpture that was installed as part of our exhibition. Juteopolis was the collective work of over 120 artists and attracted sponsorship which directly benefited the organisation.

We are delighted that Juteopolis was such a success and will now move to Dundee Heritage to be housed as part of their permanent collection and exhibited this year at Verdant Works, Dundee. There will be a series of workshops attached to the exhibition involving Dundee schools and SSA artists

SSA and Dundee Heritage were approached by the Interior and Environmental Design Department at Duncan of Jordanstone to create a concept design project for second year students, working in collaboration with Carol Aitken, lecturer and Andy Milligan, Programme Director I&ED. Students were asked to produce designs for an exhibition using Juteopolis and jute as the creative catalyst. The intention was to offer a positive and contemporary perspective on Dundee’s industrial past. The venue for this exhibition was the Visual Research Centre at Dundee Contemporary Arts. Brian Kelly, Education Officer at Verdant Works, Dundee Heritage and Louise Ritchie Vice-President SSA acted as the clients and were involved in giving presentations and tutorial input during the project and assessing work at the final team presentations.

The project was a great success and the students were able to produce highly creative and imaginative responses both to Juteopolis and the wider concepts of place and heritage.
