Transatlantic Connections consists of sculpture, printmaking, painting,
web art, photography, installation and performance by 12 contemporary
American artists whose work has never before been seen in Scotland. It
is part of a major exchange between Scottish and American artists, galleries
and educational institutions, initiated by the Society of Scottish Artists
with funding from the Scottish Arts Council, the International Initiatives
Fund of the Arts Council of Great Britain and the Saint Andrews Society
of Philadelphia - and with sponsorship from Nimmos Colour Printers, Edinburgh.
Participating artists have received support from Robert Gordon University,
in Aberdeen; Dundee University; University of the Arts in Philadelphia;
Toledo University in Ohio and the Leeway Foundation of New York.
The SSA wishes to enliven the cultural debate in Scotland and to inform
through the introduction of new American artists from a diversity of cultural
and ethnic backgrounds. 'Transatlantic Connections' will allow Scottish
viewers to see a range of new work at a time when much of the current
visual arts debate centres around British conceptual art and, in Scotland,
a domination of this scene by Glasgow artists.
