LIZ DOUGLAS

My work explores natural
forms caused by movement of tectonic plates and glacial action - as revealed
in certain places. I also look at other elements, graptolite fossils and
alpine plants. These I look at through an electron microscope. It is this
contrast between the visible and the invisible that intrigues me. What
may seem like a local landscape can, when looked at closely, reveal other
surprising dimensions which are more universal in nature. Found objects
add a human dimension. Textured and stained canvasses and boards, often
made on a large scale, scraped at and poured onto give a feeling of layers
of time, infinite variation, and movement. Although science has undoubtedly
provided valuable and illuminating information to the subject, it is not
the only element in the process.
