JACQUI HIGGS

Statement

In this ‘Works on Paper - 2007’, I have continued to develop my interest in mixed media surfaces using diverse materials such as interface, linen and collage.

Paintings begin from a combination of on-site drawings, photographs and graffiti text which are sourced from the contrasting industrial spaces of the urban city to the more intense vibrant landscapes and mountainous regions of Turkey and southern Spain.

These varied ‘scapes’ provide rich material for building up textural surfaces.

When a painting is near completion, I may include a variety of referenced images – architectural, human and more frequently, animal forms, which are interspersed with geometric motifs and occasional religious iconography.

To further enhance the final image, I overlay monoprint and/or woodblock printing, although I generally discover that these processes are overtaken by the intense applications of paint, varnish and graphite.
