| I was born in Glasgow in 1963, educated in Invergordon, and studied art in Glasgow and Chelsea before returning home to the Highlands. My work is steeped in the history of Scottish painting, with my main influences being Raeburn to Fergusson, Peploe and Cursitor. In studying these painters I have travelled in their footsteps and gone, as was the tradition then, in search of light. This has taken me to the South of France, where the intensity of colour and light has lightened my own palette, and has given me a desire to use this newly found intensity back home in Scotland. I am always looking for new subject matter for inspiration – this has led me to travel to Kenyas’ Masai Mara to paint the big five in April 04. This expedition will be a rare opportunity not only to paint but to meet and learn from David Shepherd and Jonathan Truss, internationally renowned wildlife artists – please visit my web site for more details. I exhibit in Glasgow and London Art Fairs; the Royal Glasgow Institute; the Compass Gallery Christmas Show, Glasgow; the Lennox Gallery, London; ; Tore Art Fair, Highlands; and have a web-page: e-mail: info@hughkirkwood.co.uk
