I paint in oil and watercolour and my work can be seen to divide roughly into
three kinds: figurative but personal representation of the landscape that immediately
surrounds me; imaginary, panoramic glimpses of landscape verging on the abstract;
and a work of a much more abstract nature which reflects my response to that
of which the landscape is composed – rock, water, organic matter and colour.
I am especially fascinated with a sense that contained within a stone are all
the elements of what we see around us, and an evidence of our deep connectedness
to our world. My series ‘Within a Stone’ and ‘Beyond the Stone’ reflect
these ideas.
I have lived almost half my life in Finland as an artist and musician, and have
enjoyed opportunities to combine both in projects involving groups as diverse
as from schools to professional theatre and orchestras. In many of my paintings
there is a wish to express an interaction between my perceptions of the different
surroundings I have found myself in with the feelings I have experienced whilst
there. Since recently having come to live in Galloway, they have taken on a fresh
aspect.
