Artist Statement
My work consists of assemblages/sculptures using found objects, both natural
and man-made; mixed media paintings and works in oil.
The assemblages could be described as “transfigurations” of
objects lost and found. The works evolve either through initial aesthetic
responses to the dynamics of individual pieces, which are then assembled
and take on a new life and meaning; or, are ideas based, rooted in memory
and experiences and result in sculptures that confront expectations and
challenge the viewer, taking them beyond the familiar.
The paintings, both mixed media and oil, evolve through observation drawings,
photographs and imagination. They are re-presentations of the subject
matter, through screened memories and experiences and explore a sense
of place, moment and time through colour, light and uneasy space.
Influences:
Pat and Ned Owens. Paul Nash’s Surreal Landscapes. The magical paintings
and lithographs of John Piper. Joan Eardley land/seascapes that capture
the very essence of her subject. Anne Redpath’s use of white. The
colour, space and composition of Matisse. The scale, mood and sensual
use of colour by Howard Hodgkin. Peter Lanyon’s inspirational landscapes
and assemblages “where the land meets the sea, where the flesh touches
the lips” (Lanyon).
Career Path:
After a Foundation Course in Art & Design at Birmingham Polytechnic
(1971-2), I studied for a Certificate in Education at Westhill College
(Birmingham 1972-5) specialising in Art & Design. I continued my tutelage
at Westhill with Andrew Coates in 1978 when I spent three years part-time
studying for a B.Ed (again in Art & Design). In 1983 I was granted
secondment to study for a full-time Post Graduate Advanced Diploma in
Art Education at Birmingham Polytechnic.
From 1975 to 2000 I taught Art & Design continuously in a variety
of comprehensive and special schools in Birmingham and Cumbria.
After early retirement from teaching, I moved to Scotland and began working
as a full-time, professional artist. Work is ongoing.
