: TYPE OF WORK: Portraits and studies of animals in motion, with elements of abstraction to capture the essence of the creature. April 2002 ARTISTS STATEMENT Gillian Mather, DA (Edin) MA (RCA). In my paintings I aim to capture the essence of those creatures that best represent the majesty and the dignity of the animal world. I paint powerful wild animals such as elephants, lions, tigers and bears as well as friendly domestic farm animals such as sheep and cows. My paintings are mostly semi-impressionistic representations of animals in motion. Elements of abstraction are combined with figurative forms to emphasise the key characteristics of an animal such as power, strength, speed, skill, dignity and sensitivity. My objective is to achieve visually pleasing works of art which are uplifting and which have an empathy with the animals concerned. Gillian Mather August 2002 |
