Born Malta, 1965. Grew up in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire

My work to date has been oil on canvas based. My principle interest is landscape and increasingly how technology allows us to view our surroundings in ever-changing ways. The latest body of work I produced was inspired by photographs taken from space shuttles; this has developed into an interest in cartography. Consequently I am presently working with a cartographer from the Forestry Commission to explore techniques which can be transposed from maps to the visual arts.

Whether abstract or semi-abstract, my paintings have a reference to the seen. The works I produced in 1999 were related to geological phenomena, but played with the visual worlds we discover when viewing matter at a microscopic level; specifically crystalline formations, be they of rocks or mineral compounds. What was revealed in these images was a sense of vastness, redolent of satellite imagery - hence my subsequent move to base works on the earth as seen from space.

Environmental issues underlie the approach to my work. This political aspect is developing to encompass social and demographic concerns, specifically relating to place and identity and how such information can be depicted on maps. Artistically, influences have been Willem de Kooning, Therese Oulton and Gerhard Richter.
