Tel. 0131 312 7139 Mike has painted and drawn all his life. He began to pursue this more deeply following a winter course in mountaining at Glencoe back in the 70s. At Glencoe he was drawn to the strong lines created by white snow, black rock and blue skies. Sometimes these images, being unexpected, were seen with sudden clarity, and paintings evolved through a quick initial sketch which "fixed" the moment. Several years ago Mike found that running not only kept him fit, but gave him inspiration in his work - painting problems could be solved on the run. Whilst exercising, the mind can be emptied, which helps in visualising a picture. Changes that take place due to the seasons and changing weather are more clearly seen. Many painters are stimulated by the colours that are associated with good light, as Mike is. In Scotland we are fortunate to witness the many changes that occur as light changes over the seasons. In particular Spring brings fresh colour to challenge an artist. Over the years Mike's style has developed from being detailed to a lighter, simpler style. Quick sketches ensure that irrelevancies are stripped away, leaving the essence of the picture. He has found that acrylic paint suits his style best. He basically uses five colours, all other colours being derived from these - burnt sienna, monestial blue, permanent yellow, vermilion and titanium white. He has found that a firm surface and board best suit his style. Mike has exhibited at many exhibitions, the Society of Scottish Artists, at the City Art Centre and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has had one man shows at The Netherbow, in the Royal Mile ,Edinburgh, and in 1998 at the Chessel Gallery, also in the Royal Mile. 1965-79 1979 1980 1981 1985 1989 1995 1995 1998 Over a number of years British Gas Scotland have purchased seven works for exhibition in their various premises.
