JIM PATTISON

My recent paintings are based on computer generated forms. These forms are rendered, manipulated in space, and lit until a satisfactory image is arrived at. The computer's ability to make visible these illusions, I find quite amazing. The resulting images are enlarged to a scale that I feel is appropriate, and a custom made, shaped canvas is constructed to accommodate the chosen image. A colour print out of the image is used as an initial sketch. This recent series of work stems from a fascination with the computer generated image, and a desire to see these forms realised in a painted form. I feel that the on-screen 2 dimensional illusion of the 3.D. image relates fairly directly to the picture plane of the canvas, with it's potential to allude to a third dimension. Also, the initial step by step way of starting the paintings might have parallels with the algorithmic computing process. Subjective aspects of the work occur in choosing the forms and colour of the required images, from the endless possible permutations, as well as the scale appropriate for the paintings. The translation of the images into paint also brings inevitable changes and variations as the paintings progress and find their own form. I am interested in the relationship between the on-screen image, created using programmes which mimic traditional processes of mark making and sculpture, and the finished shaped and painted result.
