Artist statement

Derived from interior spaces and the interaction of planes, light and colour within them, the motivation for the work is provided by my experience of the constructed environment. I have developed a geometric language to compare weight and proportionality in architectural spaces through the emotive, illusionary and travelling qualities of colour. Hard-edged constructed elements of the composition competes with expressive nebulous colour forms and the work poses process and technical practice alongside the development of my handling of spatial and sensory concerns and is the document of how one informs the other in my painting. This dialogue is predicated by quality of finish and to this end I am investigating digital technologies and use a spray gun and compressor to develop highly reflective glazes of pigment infused gloss paint. I am interested in investigating new technologies and employ a spray gun and compressor to develop highly reflective finishes. My compositions are informed by digital photographs and the software available to manipulate them, and I have also developed a digital printmaking practice to reflect and explore these influences.
