Statement
I have a free, expressive and painterly style and place a strong emphasis
on colour & drawing.
Working initially from direct observation of the subject to capture the
moods & light of the Scottish land- or town-scape, initial impressions
develop into paintings, pastels and etchings.
I enjoy the freedom of a more abstract approach, working away from the
subject with casual reference to sketches & memory. I find this a
more liberating process than the rendering of painstaking irrelevant detail
which can clutter the composition.
The final result is an expressive statement detached from the original
stimulus or point of reference - an entity in its own right. There are
musical and poetical references in the rhythm of paint application whether
it be by brush, palette knife or finger.
In etching I have been looking more closely at contour lines & undulations
of the landscape and the fleeting effects of light and shade suggested
by subtle aquatints.
Whistler, D.Y. Cameron and Goya are important influences.
Important to me more generally in my expression is the work of Sir Wm
MacTaggart, Oskar Kokoscha, Jack Yates & Joan Eardley .
In summary then, my natural, distinctive style & approach leads me,
in every new piece, on a journey of self-discovery without recourse to
formula-driven approaches. I have no preconception of the final result.
