Born Leven, Fife - May 1941 Education, training and teaching career Educated at Buckhaven High School from 1953 to 1959 and trained in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art under Sir Robin Philipson and James Cumming from 1959 to 1963. Attended Moray House College of Education in 1963/64 and started teaching in the Art Department of Viewforth Junior Secondary School in April 1964. Moved to Kirkcaldy High School in August 1972. Appointed Assistant Principal Teacher at Glenwood High School, Glenrothes in April 1974 and subsequently appointed Principal Teacher in 1988. Painting and inspiration I was always a regular contributor to the Fife Art Teachers shows in Kirkcaldy Art Gallery and, although trained as a painter, I was invited to exhibit silver jewellery in that gallery in a 'Group of Eight' exhibition in the late 70's. There were periods of silversmithing and painting during my teaching career but there never seemed to be enough time to produce work in any quantity, so after thirty years teaching in Fife, I retired in August 1994 and am now drawing and painting full time. Apart from the college years spent in the Capital, I have lived all my life in Fife and find that I do not need to venture far to find the inspiration and the subject matter I seek. The structure of the Fife landscape, its coastline and its ever changing light are all demonstrated in my pictures. An interesting outcome of my exhibitions in the East Neuk of Fife has been many requests to teach and demonstrate to adults in various locations throughout the county. This in turn has encouraged me to organise painting holidays in the East Neuk in the summer months. Exhibitions Since retiring from teaching I have had a successful one man exhibition every year at the Pittenweem Arts Festival while contributions to other major exhibitions include The Royal Scottish Society
of Painters in Watercolour Two or three man exhibitions - The Little Gallery,
Pittenweem Exhibitions with Fife Connection, which is an association of artists, mainly teachers or ex-teachers, who have some connection with the county of Fife - The Loomshop Gallery,
Lower Largo Mixed exhibitions - The Leith Gallery, Edinburgh am@wilson1.force9.co.uk |
