Artist’s
Statement
I am interested in
how our environment has been formed and how we interact with it. This
dynamic relationship embraces the elemental forces of nature and the concepts
of how we experience time. Both in the way I work and in the subject matter
I use there are resonances with the geological processes of building up
and wearing away of rock and sediments and with the fragmented way we
remember past experiences. Using in situ (on-the-spot) drawings and other
source work I explore these themes in large drawings, sequences of images
and complex collages. The collages develop through a virtual archaeological
process as I sift through fragments of ‘evidence’ (scraps
of previously discarded work) and then piece together by matching line,
colour or pattern etc. This process of layering, with additional drawing
and painting, further parallels the archaeological process by its transformation
of the fragments of evidence and ideas into some sort of coherent possibility.
However there is always an inherent ambiguity over exact meanings and
the need for imagination to follow up suggestions as the perspective shifts.
