Membership Types

The SSA has six membership types: Honorary, Professional, Ordinary, Invited Graduate, Student and Associate.

The majority of our members are Ordinary Members. Professional, Honorary and Invited Graduate Memberships are by election or selection only.

Ordinary Membership – £40 per year

All practising artists are eligible to join as Ordinary Members. Ordinary Members enjoy *FREE submission of works to the Annual Exhibition, plus a lower hanging fee and commission rate, an invitation to the Private View of the SSA Annual Exhibition which admits two people and FREE webpage on the SSA website in our ARTISTS section. You can get substantial discounts at many of Scotland’s largest art suppliers (and more) (see Members’ Discounts below) and have details of SSA Member opportunities for local and international SSA exhibitions and special projects; Newsletters; and information about the Annual Exhibition sent directly to you. You can also get involved and help shape the society by having the right to vote for President, Council and Exhibition Selection and Hanging & Arranging Committees for the SSA Annuals.

Student Membership – £10 per year

Student Members enjoy half price submission of works to the Annual Exhibition, plus a lower hanging fee and commission rate and FREE webpage on the SSA website in our ARTISTS section (NB: You will only receive an invitation to the Private View if you have been selected for the Annual Exhibition). You can get substantial discounts at many of Scotland’s largest art suppliers (and more) (see Members’ Discounts below) and have details of SSA Member opportunities for local and international SSA exhibitions and special projects; regular Newsletters; and information about the Annual Exhibition sent directly to you. You can also learn about Internship Opportunities with the society and get involved with the Annual Exhibition Selection and Hanging & Arranging Committees.

Professional Membership – By election only – £50 per year

Professional Membership is for artists who are actively practising professionally within one or more branches of the Visual Arts and is by selection only in recognition of their talent and dedication in this field. Professional Membership permits you to add the post-nominal title ‘SSA’ after your name to indicate that you hold this professional accreditation.

Professional Members have all the benefits of Ordinary Membership but in addition may submit more works at the Annual Exhibition and pay a lower rate of commission on sales (30% as opposed to Ordinary Members 35% and Non-Members 40%). They are also eligible to submit work to SSA Professional Member Shows.

Ordinary Members are eligible for consideration and election to Professional membership providing they meet the following criteria:
• They have been an Ordinary Member for at least the last two concurrent years and their fees have not lapsed
• They have had work accepted into the Annual Exhibition at least once within the last two years

To be considered, please send your details to the Administrator. Professional Membership Committees meet once a year in the summertime to vote on potential candidates.

Invited Graduate Membership – By selection only – 2 years FREE Membership

Each year, as part of its commitment to contemporary art, the SSA is proud to showcase the work of recent graduates from the five Scottish Art schools; Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Moray. Members of the SSA Council are despatched to each of the shows to select and formally invite two graduating students to exhibit at the following years Annual Show. Not only is this an excellent opportunity for these artists to show their work alongside newly emerging and established artists in a prominent public venue, but it also gives our members and visitors to the exhibition a glimpse of the kind of work being created in our educational institutions.

The students are further supported by an SSA Council Member who acts as mentor and supports them with their arrangements. In addition, their work is featured prominently in the exhibition catalogue and here on the SSA website. In this way the Society actively engages with the very best of the country’s emerging artistic talent and invests in their future.

Honorary Membership – By election only – FREE

Honorary Members are persons elected by the Council in recognition of their services to Art.  They pay no fees or subscriptions but have no rights or liabilities in connection with the Society.  All past Presidents, Secretaries, Administrators and Treasurers of the Society are awarded Honorary Life Membership.

Associate Membership – £20 per year

Everyone is entitled to join as an Associate Member, be they practicing artist or not. Associate Members are those who wish to support the society on an ongoing basis and keep up to date with the societies news by receiving the SSA Newsletters.

*All art works are selected anonymously for the SSA Annual Exhibition. No membership type guarantees selection.
