Society of Scottish Artists
Professional Members Exhibition Opportunity

Redrawing

Mon 4 Oct – Sat 20 Nov 2010
Eastwood Park Theatre Gallery, Eastwood Park, Giffnock, Glasgow G46 6UG

Hand in: Fri 1st October 10am – 6pm (or by arrangement with Janet Forry, Visual Arts Development Officer, Eastwood Park Theatre 0141 577 3679).

Drawing has been traditionally regarded as simply a depiction of information using dark monochromatic lines on paper. We learn the global skills of drawing as we study edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows and then the whole or gestalt. We explore drawing from memory and from imagination and as creative boundaries have fused and merged, this definition has broadened. Now drawing is used as an expressive way of exploring other materials, subject matters and methods. Drawing can be explored through print, 3dimensions or using unconventional mediums such as text or digital programmes. Drawing is always evident whether it’s seen as a line, an arrangement of shapes in space or a configuration in thread or metal; or even, as in some cultures, in writing.

The SSA invites all professional members to explore and interpret the concept of drawing for this year's exhibition at Eastwood Park Gallery.
Professional members may submit up to two artworks.

Hand back: Sun 21st Nov 10am – 5pm

Art groups raise the roof with silent sale

'Each year Scotland's three historic art societies – the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colour, the Society of Scottish Artists, and Visual Arts Scotland, which have 1,200 members between them – stage their annual exhibitions at the RSA building.

The annual open shows give young and little-known artists in particular a chance to show work in the capital's prestigious art space.

However, since the building's revamp early this decade, the rent alone now costs the societies £30,000 per year. The National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) rents the building to the societies at cost for seven weeks for their annual shows.' [click to read more...]

Metropolis. Metamorphosis. Measure.

Throughout 2011, 12 sculptors will be given the opportunity to show their work as part of three distinct exhibitions in the RBS (Royal British Society of Sculptors) Studio gallery. Four exhibitors will be selected for each of three exhibitions; there will be an accompanying evening discussion withthe participating sculptors and a guest chair and this will be open to the public. These discussion evenings will explore the concept and context of the work in relation to the sculptors’ practice and with regards to the wider context of sculpture today. The three concepts to be explored to form the exhibitions in 2011 are Metropolis, Metamorphosis and Measure, each of these exhibitions will provide an opportunity for the selected sculptors to profile their work to art professionals, fellow sculptors and the wider public, whilst engaging a captive and supportive audience during the forum discussions. These exhibitions are designed to maximise exposure in London and to provide a platform for sculptors to network and generate valuable interest in their work.

Jenny Matthews Solo exhibition - 7 - 31 May 2010
Friday 7 May, Union Gallery, Broughton Street, Edinburgh.

Few artists working in Scotland today can boast such a loyal and passionate following as Jenny Matthews. Having trained under Dame Elizabeth Blackadder at ECA, Jenny has taken the art of flower painting to the highest levels, working predominately in watercolour. Her paintings are highly observed, in contrast to the surrounding areas which are more intuitive and atmospheric, and are often inspired by colour combinations noticed while out painting. The myriad of flowers and plants, not to mention the ever-changing landscape and weather conditions, allow her to constantly find new inspiration and ideas, whether it be in the garden or further afield. Highly collected and admired, Jenny has produced a stunning collection of new work for this beautiful exhibition.
