Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year

The SSA received the letter below today. The COMPETITION sounds like a great opportunity for any Portrait Painters out there, but please also read about the FESTIVAL, which will be held in Glasgow on 21st July: ‘we also would like to feature Scottish artists in all their guises at the festival events we are building around the competition’

Hello,

I am working on a six part series for Sky Arts entitled “Portrait Artist of the Year”. Presented by Frank Skinner and Joan Bakewell it features a judging panel of Head of Contemporary at the Fine Arts Society Kate Bryan, Royal Academy director Kathleen Soriano and the most requested portrait artist at the National Portrait Gallery, Tai-Shan Schierenberg. See link for a short film and for conditions of the competition http://skyarts.sky.com/portrait

THE COMPETITION:

The competition ends on May 2nd and our judges will be whittling down the entries to 84 entrants. We will film four episodes and competition heats in Dublin, London, Glasgow and Cardiff. Each of these cities will featuring 21 shortlisted entrants painting three sitters. On each day one person will be chosen from the 21 out of each city’s heat to go through to the semi final. The four finalists will go on to paint further commissions in programme 5 and 6 until at the end of programme 6 the winner is decided.

THE FESTIVALS:

Aside from wanting as many great artists to enter as possible, we also would like to feature Scottish artists in all their guises at the festival events we are building around the competition. When we film the Glasgow heat on Sunday the 21st July, we will be filming at Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

We want to fill the alcoves with portrait related things to attract audiences to the event and also, potentially, b) to inform some aspect of portraiture that we can use within the programme. It can be people doing caricatures, water colours, lithographs, art therapy style self-portrait sessions etc… of the public for a fee which we would pay, or people wanting to hold children’s art workshops or selling their own portrait wares from miniatures to portrait pants!

We are really looking for people who would like the exposure or who really believe in the cause and want to join in what should be a fantastic day!

Any arts organisations, charities, artist workshops, art teachers etc… who would like to be involved are welcome to get in touch with me and see if there is anything we can do together. Please feel free to pass this on to as many people as possible,

Thanks again for your help,

Rocío
