Introduction From The President
Welcome to SSA 2011, the 114th Annual Open Exhibition of the Society of Scottish Artists which once again brings together a vibrant and exciting mix of members, non-members and recent graduates work, exploring a multitude of ideas, styles and media.
Staging the Annual Exhibition is a daunting task which is made possible only through the tireless efforts of a small group of volunteers to whom the entire Society owes a debt of gratitude; from our administrator, the members of Council and the elected Committees, the small number of members who return year after year to help, and the students from Moray and Edinburgh College of Art. It is their generosity that makes the whole event possible and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all.
Our annual New Graduates programme, which sees two artists chosen from each of the five Scottish colleges to exhibit with us, always brings a freshness and ambition to the show and this year is no exception and I thank them all for their contribution.
The Annual Exhibition is the visible face of the Society – however it is only part of what we do. This year, our educational activities have allowed the SSA to engage with different audiences and age groups from age 3 to 2nd year art students. Vice President Louise Ritchie created a Hidden Cube Trail to coincide with the installation and permanent housing of Juteopolis at Verdant Works, Dundee; participated again in a conceptual exhibition design project with Interiors DJCAD, Dundee; and delivered an Expressive Drawing Workshop in Glasgow as part of the Exposure Art Festival 2010. We continue to build on these initiatives as well as working hard to construct new relationships.
We are also currently involved in three International initiatives which are creating dialogues between Scottish artists and artists in Poland, Slovakia and Canada. After last year’s Grafika Polska exhibition, this year we play host to the mysterious world conjured in the prints of Marianne Chevalier, our selected artist from the Engramme Print Studio in Quebec. During 2011 we will be selecting an SSA artist to reciprocate with a solo show in Quebec, and selected members will be exhibiting in Slovakia as part of the Project Bridges initiative.
My thanks also go out to those on the ever-increasing list of Prize-Sponsors who have chosen to generously support the Society and our artists by recognising the wealth of talent that we foster in a real and positive way.
We must all be aware that in the current climate, membership organizations like ours who serve the arts and communities must change and adapt with the market to reach wider audiences who will support, sponsor and promote our mission. We are continuously working to secure the future of the Society and on behalf of the membership we would like to thank you for visiting and your valued contribution.

Invited Graduate Artists
As part of its commitment to contemporary art, the SSA showcases the work of recent graduates from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Moray. At each degree show members of the SSA Council select and formally invite two graduating students to exhibit at the following years Annual Show. This is an opportunity to show work alongside newly emerging and established artists in a prominent public venue. The students are supported by a Council member to enable them with their arrangements and their work is featured in the exhibition catalogue and on the website. In SSA 2011 the Society is delighted to be hosting the wonderful work of Marianne Chevalier, the first Canadian artist to be exhibited in Scot
land as part of the exciting new exchange project with the Engramme Studios in Quebec, Canada. Click here to view the works of Marianne Chevalier.
The exchange programme has been set up to to create a dialogue between Scottish and Canadian artists working in the field of printmaking. During the Summer of 2011 we will be calling for submissions from SSA members to be considered for a solo exhibition in Quebec. Assistance will be given in Canada and there will be funds available to help with shipping of the work overseas. All members will be eligible. Click here to find out more about this opportunity.

The Edinburgh Printmakers Award:
This prize offers the opportunity for an artist to attend a printmaking course at Edinburgh Printmakers plus three months free session fees enabling them to work in the studio to create a body of work.
SSA Website Awards:
The SSA will award two artists the opportunity of having their work featured on this site for a year. The winners will be prominently featured on the website homepage.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SSA MEMBERS
SSA Scotland/Poland Exchange
The SSA will be curating an exhibition of members’ work to travel to Wroclaw in April 2012. The exhibition will concentrate on original prints and artist’s books. Further details, including submission and selection process, will be posted as they become available.
