An opportunity for an art student to work alongside the SSA as Intern on many aspects of the planning and creation of the Annual Exhibition 2014, which will take place in December in the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh.

The SSA intern will be guaranteed an experience that is broad ranging, exciting and challenging. A fantastic opportunity to meet practising artists and gain a snapshot into the vocational life of practicing artists, by aiding in the running of one of the largest, most historically respected professional contemporary shows.

The intern will support the SSA President, Council, Administrator, Selection, Hanging & Arranging Committees with all aspects of organising the exhibition: the hand-in of works; observing and assisting the selection process, the layout and install of the exhibition; liaising, supporting and working directly with selected and unselected artists; art handling; managing the database and updating the website; mail outs; catalogue proofing; numbering and labelling of works; exhibition display; telephoning contacts; potentially assisting with the organising, running and documenting of a workshop; the hand-back of unselected works; preparation of the gallery walls for the Private View and finally with the takedown, wrapping of sales and hand-back of works.

“The opportunity to undertake an internship with the SSA is invaluable for students who wish to gain an insight into the important work that goes on behind the scenes to manage an artist’s collective. We were very proud that a student from Moray School of Art held the inaugural internship, an experience which has had a clear and positive impact upon Charis and her vision of what the future might hold for her as a creative graduate.” Gina Wall, Curriculum Leader, Moray School of Art.

“It is with great comfort that I can now say I am quite a bit more prepared for living and working as an artist outside of art school. The SSA gave me a valuable opportunity to work in a professional environment with professional artists, learn about the enormous amount of work that goes into the Annual exhibition each year and the chance to be a part of it. The people I met and the experience I earned will stand me in good stead for my life outside of art education. This internship is a golden opportunity.”  Charis Edward Wells, SSA Intern 2013.

Applications should be addressed in the form of a C.V and accompanying letter saying why the candidate would like to work with the society, including information regarding suitable skills and past work experience.
