Awards – £1,500, £500 and £500

It’s that time of the year again – applications for Fabric of the Land 2013 are now OPEN! Fabric of the Land is a series of open submission exhibitions exploring the links between art and science and is held in the Geology and Petroleum Geology Department at the University of Aberdeen.

Fabric of the Land is a quest to investigate the inspiration given to art by examination of characteristics of the physical landscape. Since our inaugural Fabric of the Land in 2009 we have celebrated the complementary visualisation of Earth’s geology as manifest in landscape from which artists derive their inspiration with the science associated with the same subjects. We encourage investigation that embraces micro to giga-scale features, from fossil pollen grains and clay particles to mountain chains and Earth’s structure. No natural occurrence of colour, form or structure is ‘off limits’ as subject matter. In 2013 Fabric of the Land provides an open brief for emerging and established artists to express their inspiration from the landscape and escape from the constraints of accuracy and precision that are inherent in scientific description. The exhibition is now in it’s fifth year and is going from strength to strength with entries form all over the UK and worldwide.
