Professional SSA Member Mary Morrison has a solo exhibition Undertow at &Gallery in Edinburgh.
Mary grew up in the Western Isles, and is drawn to exploring the space and light particular to the islands. She is led by the pursuit of ‘memory places’ and aims to evoke a sense of place through fluid paint effects combined with geometry and annotation – the visual language of mapping, measuring and music.
Her intention is not to render the topography of a landscape but to explore in a more abstracted way the relationship between the individual and the landscape that has shaped them, something you carry with you – a ‘geography of the mind’. Her work suggests liminal spaces, edges and tidal lines, and is textural and layered. Mary works from her WASPS Studio in Selkirk.
