Join SSA Council

Deadline: Friday 23 October, 10am
The Scottish Society of Artists Council runs entirely on a voluntary basis. The Council is made up of the Co-Presidents, Vice Presidents, Professional, Artist, and Co-opted Members all of whom contribute their time, skills and experience to support the Society and its members.
This year, we have five vacancies for new Council members and one vacancy for Treasurer:
3 x Professional Artist Members (Elected)
2 x Artist Members
1 x Treasurer
Being a part of the Council is a hands-on and rewarding role. It can be busy at times and requires commitment, but it also offers a wonderful opportunity to meet and work with artists from across many disciplines. It is a chance to learn more about the SSA’s rich history and creative contribution, while helping to shape its role within Scotland’s evolving cultural landscape.
Council members play an active part in the life of the Society. Depending on their interests and skills, they contribute to:
- Promoting the SSA and its activities;
- Creating opportunities for members through exhibitions, projects and exchanges
- Developing relationships with artists, organisations and cultural institutions
- Supporting fundraising and the long term sustainability of the Society
- Helping to plan and deliver the SSA’s Annual Exhibition
- Contributing ideas and energy to the future direction of the organisation
WHAT COULD YOU BRING?
We’re interested in the different skills and experience you can bring. This may include:
– Supporting artists: enjoy encouraging others to develop their practice
– Teaching, facilitating or sharing knowledge at any level
– Fundraising or supporting fundraising activities
– Writing and editing (particularly if you would enjoy contributing to the SSA Essay Project.)
– Building relationships and making connections with other arts organisations and other partners on behalf of the SSA.
– Financial experience. We are particularly keen to hear from members with financial experience who would be interested in taking on the role of a Council Trustee/Treasurer.
We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have not served on Council before, or since 2022 and who have the time, energy and ideas to bring to the Society and help shape its future development.
Council members serve a three-year term, after which they stand down. Council meetings take place approximately every 4-6 weeks, and members are also encouraged to contribute to exhibition committees and other subgroups according to their interests and availability.
There is an additional time commitment for developing projects, supporting Society activities and helping to organise and deliver the Annual Exhibition. The level of involvement can vary throughout the year, but we are looking for people who are able to make a meaningful and sustained contribution.
If you are interested in becoming part of the SSA Council and helping to shape the Society’s next chapter, we would be delighted to hear from you.
TREASURER
As part of this year’s recruitment, the Council would like to appoint a Council Trustee with some financial experience to provide strategic and financial support to the SSA Administrator.
The Administrator will continue to manage the day-to-day bookkeeping, banking and other financial functions. The Trustee would provide oversight, guidance and strategic support, rather than taking on the Society’s routine financial administration.
We would encourage any existing SSA Member with relevant financial experience who would be interested in contributing in this way to get in touch to register interest directly by emailing admin@s-s-a.org
HOW TO APPLY FOR A COUNCIL POSITION
Please complete this << NOMINATION FORM >> with the following information: name, email, link to your website and/or your SSA web profile and up to 150 words about you, the skills and experience you can bring and why you would like to be part of the SSA Council.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The President and Council will consider nominations, and if we receive more applications than the number of vacancies available the SSA membership will be invited to vote on applications. The members with the most votes will be offered the position.
We look forward to receiving your nomination.
