I draw and paint in the highlands and islands of Scotland, trying to capture the moods of the sea and the true colours of the landscape. As a keen hillwalker, I like to express how I feel about the hills in textures and tones, working in the open air as much as I can. However, I also used to be a town planner, and find myself attracted to old fishing huts, corrugated iron structures, piers and harbour walls – buildings and shapes that have a bit of character and speak of the crafts of the past. Trees of all kinds are another favourite subject because they are so individual – and magical.

I sketch from nature and then work mostly in acrylic with graphite and ink, often in monochrome. I also like to experiment with pigments, oils and traditional gesso. As a printmaker I love the craft of etching in all its forms. I also do linocuts and woodblock printing and make monotypes using gelatine plates.

I have always felt inspired by the work of Cezanne, Matisse, the Scottish Colourists and the Canadian Group of Seven, and enjoy creating decorative pieces to try to reveal something fresh about the world about us.
