Landscape, weather, colour and light are all starting points for my paintings which are almost always rooted by a solitary and central motif - usually a tree. I work in oils on canvas and the paintings are developed over time by building thin layers of colour and mark making to create depth and intensity.

The imagery and composition is simple and distilled and preoccupied by indistinct and spontaneous mark making which briefly comes into focus. I want the work to have a resonance, a sense of contemplation and calm, and to go some way to echo the beautiful and meditative spaces I encounter and that have inspired them.

I graduated in 1997 from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art with an MA in Fine Art and have been a practising studio artist since 2009. I have gallery representation throughout the UK and regularly show at the Affordable Art Fairs in London and more recently New York with Brighton based Cameron Contemporary Art with whom I have also had 4 successful solo exhibitions since 2013, two of them in London.

I also facilitate museum and gallery education workshops for children young people and adults on a freelance basis for the National Galleries of Scotland, Scottish Borders Council, Live Borders and Allanbank Arts. I am an artist member of the Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland.
