Statement
| Statement | I trained in fine art drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1994 to 1998 and since then I have worked both as an artist and an art teacher in secondary education. I love looking at the world and find that my interactions with young people help keep my mind more open to new ideas and possibilities – especially as I get older myself. I work mainly in oil or acrylic paint, but have also used colour pencil and digital imaging to explore the things that interest me. My work is often based on nature and natural form – sometimes botanical, sometimes the human body. I am particularly interested in details, things we walk past easily but if looked at closely are beautiful and strange. The wrinkles on hands, the centre of flowers, a drop of water on a leaf. I paint in a photorealistic way but often using my materials to create more painterly textures. Colour is hugely important. I also enjoy distortion in images such as the bending of perspective in fish-eye lenses and experiments with depth of field. Artist’s whose work has influenced mine include Pierre Bonnard, Georgia O’Keeffe and David Hockney. |
