SSA ESSAY PROJECT | Mavi Hamali
We are pleased to publish Learning to Remain by SSA Member, by SSA Artist Member Mavi Hamali.
Mavi is a Turkish Ebru artist and sculptor based in Dumfries, her practice is rooted in traditional Ebru, a centuries-old marbling technique.
Mavi’s essay navigates migration, grief and belonging. , it traces a journey from Antakya to London to Glasgow to Dumfries, and an earthquake on 6 February 2023, that changed everything. Through the practice of Ebru (painting on water) the essay explores how art can hold contradiction, and how belonging is built not through location, but through relation.
