SSA ESSAY PROJECT | Sarmed Mirza
We are pleased to publish ‘What I Was Making When I Didn’t Know I Was Making It’ by SSA Artist Member, Sarmed Mirza.
Sarmed Mirza is a British Asian multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores stillness, emotional clarity, memory, and transformation. Working across drawing, painting, film, and storytelling, he moves between figurative realism and abstract micro-painting. Water, light, grief, belonging, and ecological change recur throughout his work, which is grounded in contemplative practice and shaped by travel, loss, and inner transformation.
His writing explores the mysterious process by which art emerges before language can explain it. Weaving together childhood memory, migration, loss and the evolution of my ReGenesis series, it reflects on how our deepest work often reveals itself only after it has been made.

The SSA essay programme intends to highlight the creative thinking of our members and to provide a platform for expressing and sharing our opinions on Art, Life and the World.
SSA Members are invited to submit essays for consideration by the SSA Essay Steering Group. This Group will look for essays containing original ideas and pertinent comments on the arts and beyond. You might, for example, like to write about your own art practice, the work of other artists you are familiar with, shows you have seen, or your musings on creative and cultural life.
