Statement

I am inspired by subject matter that allows me to investigate the classical qualities of composition, structure, texture and the contrast of light and shade. This has influenced my approach to painting throughout my career from the decorative and symbolic surrealism of the 1970s and 80s to the more recent realist landscape studies. The passage of time fascinates me. I am particularly intrigued by the apparent permanence of mountainous landscape and the obvious impermanence of human impact on the land seen in the slow deterioration of man made structures such as buildings. My favoured medium, at present, is gouache whereas earlier work involved oil and pva acrylic.
Paintings can currently be seen at Resipole Studios, Acharacle and Orchar Gallery, Dundee.
