PERPETUAL MOTION | SSA AT AN LANNTAIR

The SSA is delighted to be collaborating with An Lanntair to provide an opportunity for our Members to submit work for an exhibition titled ‘’Perpetual Motion’ from 17 October – 5 December 2026.

We invite SSA Members to respond to the the theme ‘Perpetual Motion’; an invitation to reflect on the migration of people, animals, objects, systems or ideas. Movement is intrinsic to our history and functioning as a species on this planet. It is prominent in current humanitarian and political crises, from international conflict to individual immigration and asylum-seeking, from colonialism to shifting populations in response to a changing climate. Conversely, migration has been essential in the development of complex global cultures and knowledge exchanges. Movement is the only constant in an ever-changing planet; it is woven into our ecosystems, shaping the world we live in, the flora and fauna we share it with, the food we eat, the land we stand on and the oceans that regulate our climate.

Through painting, sculpture, original prints, installation, digital media, and interdisciplinary works, Perpetual Motion invites artists to hold up the lens of migration to the world we live in, questioning how it works, where we fit into it, and how it is changing.

The exhibition at An Lanntair will be paired with a showcase of selected works by Hebridean artists at the next SSA Annual exhibition in 2027. The showcase will be curated by Hulabhaig, a Hebridean visual arts initiative led by Andy Laffan.

The exhibition will include work by invited artist and SSA member Ade Adesina.

About An Lanntair

An Lanntair is a multi-arts hub for creativity and the Arts in Stornoway on the Island of Lewis, with an exhibition programme that profiles international art while celebrating and promoting local art and artists. An Lanntair is situated within a culture and landscape that continues to be shaped fundamentally by migration. This takes many forms, from a current pattern of depopulation as younger people move from the Islands to urban centres, to the emigration of many thousands of people over the past 250 years alone, in response to forced clearances and economic pressures. The Outer Hebrides played a key role historically in in the fishing and trade of herring – a fish whose complex migratory patterns plays a crucial role in many global ecosystems.
