A ‘sense of place’ lies at the heart of my art practice and this is heavily dependent on making work on location. I make searching drawings and paintings directly from source, exploring, searching and responding to the urban landscape. Working in oil, watercolour and more recently with printmaking and stitch, the lines and soft glazes that are characteristic in my work enable me to develop this ‘plein air’ tradition into a more contemporary visual language beyond the topographical.

Catharine (born 1970) is originally from Kilkeel in Northern Ireland. She is a passionate and committed outdoor contemporary painter who spends countless hours working ’en plein-air’ from locations such as Calton Hill, Blackford Hill and the Craggs. Since relocating to Edinburgh in 2007, her practice has become increasingly ambitious, winning several professional exhibition awards; In 2013 at the Society of Scottish Artists exhibition (SSA), she was awarded the ‘British Embassy in Slovakia’ prize of a solo show for her painting ‘Hound Point, a depiction of Edinburgh’s urban landscape. This SSA prize award builds on the success of ‘Bridges Scotland’, a project established in 2003 to foster collaborative partnerships between artists in Scotland and Slovakia. The prize of an exhibition in Bratislava is an opportunity to contribute to the growing legacy of cultural exchanges and she looks forward to beginning research for the exhibition later in 2015. Also in 2013 she was one of 9 short-listed artists for the Jolomo landscape award, and had her first solo show at the Open Eye Gallery, September in Edinburgh. At the RSA Open in 2014 she was awarded the Scottish Arts Club Prize of a Solo Exhibition for 2016 and also received first prize at the Lynn Painter Stainers Award for creative representational painting at the Mall Galleries in London for her painting ‘The Craggs at Dawn, (from Calton Hill). She is currently working towards my second solo exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh (May 16th- 3rd June).

Catharine is actively involved in art education working in schools and colleges in Scotland. Focusing on location drawing projects with Illustration students at ECA and running a Portfolio Preparation Course in Art for the Art and Design Studies programme at the University of Edinburgh. She also teaches Art at Loretto School, Musselburgh and work as an Art Moderator for Edexcel GCSE qualifications at Pearson.
