Detail of Bethan, oil on board

I love the process of making art, drawing, painting and planning – I focus primarily on faces, figures and portraiture, but have also developed a personal language of colourful skies, wasps nests, sweets and sleep. Recently I have been thinking a lot about truth, experience and femininity – I am always looking for beauty, poetry, and personal resonance. I constantly experiment to develop my skills with paints, inks, and mixed media, and like to use a wide range of techniques and scale. I am greedy for colour, textures, tone and pattern. My artistic style is imaginative and very personal, and is often derived from visions, images I see in a dreamlike state. My work is often loosely narrative based, but I never know the ending - I like to surprise myself.

I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee in 1987. I am married with three grown up children, and we are all artists or musicians - my mother Elizabeth Shepherd is an established artist, and has been a great influence. I have taught art in high school for nearly twenty years but have now become self-employed as an artist. I have had two solo exhibitions in Fife, and was a featured artist in 2019's Cupar Arts Festival. I am currently working with Queen Margaret University developing a wide-ranging project on Lipoedema, a condition I have.
