Aoife Cawley’s practice uses printmaking and textiles to allow her to express her research most clearly and to respond to stories rooted in history, folklore, and mythology. Much of her inspiration comes from historical artefacts—whether visiting sites of significance or studying objects behind glass in museums. She is particularly drawn to the medieval period, where symbolism was embedded in everyday objects and artwork. This is echoed in the layered symbolism in her pieces, creating compositions that hold multiple meanings, much like the intricate stencils, screens, and processes involved in making them. Colour and luminosity also play an important role in her work. Fluorescent inks attempt to replicate the glow of stained glass and bring a sense of radiance to each piece.
