Statement

Statement

David Cass’ artistic approach is wide-ranging: each project anchored by sustainability and environmental campaign. While painting and construction are the artforms he uses most often, his recent projects also involve photography, writing, audience participation and curation. Bound by their use of gathered and recycled source materials, Cass’ artworks each investigate water in some way.

Biography

Biography

David was brought up in the Scottish Borders, where he still keeps a studio. He received a Royal Scottish Academy scholarship soon after graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2010. He’s spent the years since then focussed on his art practice, developing a body of work that’s been widely exhibited. David is currently dividing his time between London, the Scottish Borders & Athens.

“Quietly radical, Cass’ art incorporates the activity of collecting into the process of making, so that the function of the artist for once utterly displaces the Romantic prototype of the wildman with the bravura brush, and becomes instead a sort of everyman, a Robinson Crusoe scavenging in order to build a new and stripped down life, an aesthetically curious Claude Lévi-Strauss walking through an apparently disordered landscape and finding structure there, an Erasmus, a citizen of the world who can be at home wherever there is water, wood, and weakening memory.”

— Patricia Emison

“With each new project, Cass’ exploration into environmental themes deepens…”

— The Scottish Gallery
