Statement
Statement | The process of making my recent abstract paintings is an instinctive one of putting marks down because something inarticulate and feral – yet uncompromisingly scrupulous – demands it, while a multitude of imposter subpersonalities attempt to stage a coup. Making paintings and collages provides moments where possibilities of reconciling opposites open up – the flat, non-representational surface of a small canvas becomes spacious, and ruthlessness is revealed as unexpectedly tender. Inner exploration, and attunement to the kinaesthetic experience of feeling, have always been drivers in my creative practice, along with a simple desire to feed my eyes with colour. In 2010 I stopped making figurative and representational work and, bypassing the symbolic and narrative, began making abstract paintings. I am also an accredited Jungian Life Coach and creativity coach. |
Biography
Biography | Elise graduated from Glasgow School of Art, and has worked as a part time tutor in Glasgow School of Art within the Communication Design department since 1993. She became an accredited creativity coach in 2018, and an accredited Jungian Life Coach in 2023, and she has a small private practice with both individual clients and small creative reflection groups. Elise has exhibited regularly since graduating in solo and group shows. Her last solo show, Memories of a Bee, was in Nicholls Gallery, Glasgow, in 2022. After many years of making figurative paintings that mined the subconscious, Jungian writing, and an interest in early Mediterranean matriarchal societies, she moved away from representation in 2010 and began to drill deeper towards a quieter whole-body knowing and has been making abstract paintings and collages since then. |
