Statement

Statement

My work is multimodal: taking the light in the landscape around my home in rural Aberdeenshire as my inspiration, I am continually seeking to explore colour as I experience it. Starting with sketched studies of reflections or field boundaries, for example, this may lead to a mobile of abstracted shapes or collage of evoked colour. There is nothing static in my environment – everything changes according to season or weather, and I have found printmaking, whether screen-print, monoprint, and painted relief on wood, to be powerful media for capturing the nuances and sensations of a given moment and in abstract forms.

My process involves paring visual material down to its essence: I think my need to capture the transient quality of moments of colour, of light, movement, and reflections in water is what drives me. I care about empowering viewers to understand the journey of a completed image, and enabling them to form an experience of their own. For this reason, I always supply exhibition sketchbooks, guiding the viewer through my thought and development process, using photographic, watercolour and pen and ink images. I have found viewers to be empowered by this.
