Statement

Statement

Brief Practice Statement:

My work is site-responsive and is informed by a process of immersion, extraction and abstraction. Using a combination of painting, drawing and sculptural forms I seek an understanding of place that extends beyond the immediate aesthetic to explore what can not always be seen on the surface.

My approach typically involves extensive fieldwork research (walking, drawing, collecting material) alongside a dedicated studio practice. Reflecting my interest in materiality I use a wide range of traditional and non traditional materials including; oil paint, graphite, gesso, size, pigments and varnishes and more recently porcelain. Working in a quick loose way responding to the process, I welcome and yet seek to control the accidental within my work, hoping to balance expressive energy with sensitivity to detail.

I am drawn to objects and natural forms which reflect the forces of nature and the history which has shaped and marked them.  In looking for traces of what is left behind I am interested in what can be seen below the surface, the invisible marks and scars.

Of enduring interest to me is the elemental power of water and the inscriptions and marks that stem from its’ movement and journey. I am concerned, not just with the physical properties of water but also the liminal space between land and water, the edge lines which are marked and scarred by continual movement and change with boundaries constantly formed and reformed. In addition the work reflects on questions of transience, loss, memory, and lament.
