Statement

Statement

A modern Scottish Colourist. As a painter, whether figurative or abstract, I am particularly interested in colour, which I wish to be clean and pure, and drawing which I like to be tight and sharp. When working in other fields like film, sound, photography, sculpture or printmaking, common features would be an emphasis on tight structure and composition. I am more drawn to classical, cool form rather than expressive or romantic form. There is always a conceptual aspect behind each work, which follows an experimental development, often trying to find a concrete solution to a visual or other question, such that I produce discrete bodies of work which appear to be quite distinct from each other, according to the nature of the task in hand. In Leeds I trained under Sir Lawrence Gowing and members of the Euston Road School – Maurice Fields, Claude Rogers and their modern successor Paul Gopal-Chowdhury, but also Oleg Prokofiev Norman Stevens and Ainsley Yule. In Florence, I occupied Donatello’s Studio in San Lorenzo for a while then trained at the Accademia Di Belle Arti under pupils of Kokoschka and Renato Guttuso, also studying art restoration with Prof Pietro Gori. In Aberystwyth I studied under David Tinker and Moira Vincentelli. Since 1990 I have worked at various Art Schools and Universities in the UK and abroad, returning to become Head of Fine Art at Leeds University and eventually Professor Emeritus of Contemporary Art Practice there,  a Department which I founded. I am also Visiting Professor of Aesthetics at Masaryk University Brno, CZ.
