Statement
Statement | ‘A crease in the canvas or an arbitrary mark starts a dialogue and the conversation begins. What follows is a constant state of flux, an exchange of opinion, argument and assertion, followed by lots of humming and hawing, further proposals and rumination — the inevitable cycle of this chosen pathway.’ As an artist I am interested in the unconscious mind and its ability to govern my actions, what at first starts out as a random act begins to reveal itself. I realise that the subsequent imagery is the result of my own state of mind, that titles suggest themselves as I begin to realise that the colour palette is a memory from a holiday or a feeling of melancholia that has engulfed me. It is important throughout this process that any decision made about a colour, its shape or size is intuitive and this usually involves leaving the studio and on my return reacting to the first response that is felt when seeing the work again. Sometimes this might mean a very dramatic intervention and in other cases a very subtle change in colour. Translucent layers and the butting up of two colours next to each other are something that I find exciting, that gap in-between that creates tension or an optical shift. The surface of the paintings inevitably trap time, they silently record the actions of the maker, all decisions taken are documented ( sometimes hidden) and play a part in what subsequently appears; they are conversations that at this moment in time have been put on hold because on reflection, they could be taken up again and a different viewpoint might emerge.
