Rowena loved drawing and painting from a very young age. She moved to New Zealand in 2002, where the beautiful, big open skies and clear light dancing on the ocean triggered an overwhelming desire to train and explore her creativity. She studied oil painting in Auckland, New Zealand.

Rowena followed the sublime light and immense skies by choosing to live in Scotland on her return to the UK in 2007.

Rowena honed her skills in drawing, form, and colour by studying in summer schools at the Edinburgh College of Art. She is a member of the Society of Scottish Artists, the Poldrate Arts/Crafts Centre, Haddington.

Professional artist Georgina Bown mentors Rowena, encouraging her to use mediums and materials in different ways, opening new and exhilarating possibilities and ensuring her work continues to evolve. Rowena uses a range of mediums; oil and acrylic paints, inks, charcoal, erasers and a scalpel in her mark making.

Rowena regards being an active part of a local artistic community vital to invigorate growth and development, she is a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) and the Poldrate Arts/Crafts Centre, Haddington.

Rowena is emerging as a professional artist; in 2022 she held her first public exhibition with another professional artist. Rowena has exhibited in a further 7 group exhibitions in Edinburgh/Lothians, including at the Royal Scottish Academy, SSA exhibition in 2022. Rowena was shortlisted in the Jacksons Art Prize 2023, her Seascape in Charcoal was exhibited at the Bankside Gallery, London in July 2023.

Rowena loves to capture light and shade within the natural world; she is intrigued by how small variations in light can alter our perception of the object or scene.
