Statement

Statement

My work is mostly inspired by the landscapes in the Isle of Lewis. I’m interested in how we connect deeply with the natural places. Through walking and drawing I have built up a relationship with the hills, lochs, boulders and rock faces near my home. I look for new ways of looking and thinking about the things I see and hear, and let these findings influence my studio work.

The work I make is personal and over the years I have built up a visual vocabulary based around the nature I encounter daily. There is always something to discover even if you walk the same route every day.

I am also interested in the histories held by people and place, the sites that are visible, left by our relatives or neighbours from the past and the memories that are kept in the place.

Among these things are the changes that are happening globally, and reflected locally. There is a conflict between the brutality of the world and the need for beauty, and I aim for this need to bring hope into my work.

Biography

Biography

I was born in a small Lewis village called Marvig, growing up in a fishing/ crofting family. I have been based in Lewis since completing my studies in 2000

I initially studied sculpture at Grays school of Art, then later I went on to do a postgrad MA at Central St Martins where I studied scenography (live performance)

I went home after that as a carer, and then began to take on free-lance work – mostly in art education,  community projects, commissions, film/ tv projects.

Throughout my life I have always had a drawing practice and over the years this has developed towards painting and printmaking.
