Statement
| Statement | My work is rooted in the intimate processes of drawing, printmaking and painting and is characterised by the scribbly, gestural marks from which forms emerge. I work in loose layers to build up colour and texture and I am very much directed by media. My practice encircles one of my great personal interests: animals. Through my experience working with birds of prey, I have developed an interest in the peculiar human relationships and perceptions of animals and the wild in general, particularly when said perceptions bring about hypocrisy, controversy, confusion and humour. I am fascinated by the falsified hierarchies we have established in which animals are ranked good to bad, cute to ugly, and in which we sit on some imagined pedestal. As such, I often use pets in my work as these are the animals we are most familiar with but also the most anthropomorphised. I regularly use animals that are highly symbolic like vultures and cats but also can’t help but paint my beloved raptors whose solitary character is a good contrast to the sociable pets. There is an undeniable, unavoidable, ecological aspect to my practice, sometimes depicting endangered or overlooked animals and drawing attention to our perceptions of wildness and the damage we inflict on the natural world though our opinions. Whilst philosophical and inquisitive in style, it is important to me that my work may cause others to consider their own perceptions of animals; What is cute? What is evil? What is cruel? What is natural? |
Biography
| Biography | I’m a young artist from Scotland and a recent graduate in painting and printmaking from the Glasgow School of Art. I currently manage a print studio for the Royal Drawing School at Dumfries House in Ayrshire. My work is inspired by nature and memory and specialise in portraiture of both people and animals – particularly birds with whom I have a close working relationship. |
