Statement
| Statement | I am a fine art printmaker, drawing inspiration from a large personal collection of inter- and national travel photographs, transforming internalised experiences into atmospheric images.
The scenes may be worked up in photography itself or as contemporary drawings, depicting nature, landscape and architecture and encapsulating the essence of the place or situation witnessed. I operate across a range of printmaking processes and am equally fascinated by the process of deciding which technique to apply as the physical production itself.
I print in order to help preserve and share traditional printmaking skills and heritage for future generations. My practice is driven by an instilled, personal need for the sensory and tactile experience of working with heavy presses, textured papers, the glistening ink when a print is first revealed, the smell of ink in the air and the buzz of being in a workshop. |
Biography
| Biography | Born in Bavaria, Germany, Ursula Pretsch moved to Scotland in 2001. Originally trained as a project and process manager, in 2015 Ursula made use of an opportunity to work with and study under master printmakers at Edinburgh Printmakers’ open access studio during an internship as studio assistant. Now an active artist member, she creates most of her work there.
In addition to local group and joint exhibitions with fellow printmakers, a selection of Ursula’s work was shown and sold at the 10e Triennale de l’Estampe Mondiale in France where she also engaged with the audience during intaglio demonstrations.
Due to access restrictions during 2020-21 lockdowns, Ursula has concentrated on furthering her crafts practice by creating botanical sun prints on fabric and exploring contemporary bookbinding methods. Ursula Pretsch lives and works in Edinburgh. |
