Val Menon is a painter based in Edinburgh. A Fine Art graduate of Nottingham College of Art and Design. She moved to Edinburgh in 1989 and is based in Coburg House Artist Studios.
My main visual interest is in exploring landscapes and particularly natural environments. My approach is unpremeditated. I work outside and gather as much visual information as possible. I try to explore the character of a place through observing. I spend time looking and responding to the environment that I immerse myself in. I use a process of mixing, mark making and application of paint using drawing materials, watercolour, oil and more recently a complete natural paint system. I like to find and reference hidden structures, exaggerate form and play with line. I am always mindful of maintaining integrity of the subject. It is a visual experience of the moment and I strive for the work to reflect it. Back in the studio I refer to my sketch book, paper works and words that I have written. I start to look again, cross reference and play with the subject, paint, colour and scale. |
