Biography

Biography

This short biography was written by my Father for my Cameo Picturehouse Artist Residency (January 2025 – May 2025):

This collection of works by Ysobel Gouriet largely features scenes from East Lothian and Edinburgh, particularly Holyrood Park’s Salisbury Crags and Arthur’s Seat. The artist has drawn inspiration from the natural world, tending to avoid any physical presence or manmade structure, exploring nature and natural compositions, fluctuating skies and colours through the seasons. Inspired by such diverse artistic movements as romanticism, expressionism and impressionism, these works originate as small watercolours in the sketchbook Ysobel carries on walks, as she searches for interesting and expressive shapes and colours within the landscapes.

Despite growing up in Bath, Ysobel has spent her entire life visiting East Lothian, where her grandfather lived, and where the dramatic and sculpted scenery, whether land, sea or sky, and the extraordinary array of colours and light, sowed seeds of inspiration from childhood. Now studying art history at Edinburgh University’s College of Art, she draws from the surrounding environments and takes inspiration from her frequent visits to the Royal Botanic Gardens and East Lothian.
