Statement
Statement | My practice includes installations, painting, printmaking and sculpture. I make work in response to particular places, and it is important for me to research, understand and connect to the history and evolution of any place I am making work about. I’m especially interested in the coast and places with a strong maritime heritage, and how that heritage highlights links and relationships with other places.
Before I fully realise any work, I undertake research – reading and using materials including maps and photographs, and making drawings – before developing these into compositions. The materials I use in my paintings – aluminium, wood, paper, plywood and acrylic sheets – are always an important and relevant part of the work.
I often make site-specific work, in the form of installations and outdoor or larger wall-based paintings. This work always connects strongly to the site where it is located, and responds to and engages with its environment. I have made work in locations including a former prison cell, a First World War boat shed, an ammunitions store on a former military airbase, a public loo and a derelict fishing factory. For all of these the work responded directly to the location. The viewer’s own experience of the work is also an important consideration for my installations.
My work is visually abstract, but there is always a tangible starting point from which I begin any composition, whether a small painting or a large-scale public installation. That starting point may be a map, a journey, a building, a story or a piece of data. |
